About Yanai Nerunjil (Large Caltrops)
Large Caltrops (Pedalium Murex) is a shrubby, stiff-stemmed herb native to India, known for its reputed medicinal and other uses. This diffuse annual plant is much-branched, spreading, succulent, and glandular, growing up to 60 cm tall. Its roots are similar in color to turmeric. The leaves are simple, opposite, ovate or oblong-obovate, 1-4.5 cm long, and irregularly and coarsely crenate-serrate. The plant produces yellow flowers that are 1.5-2 cm across, with stalks 1-2 mm long, increasing up to 4 mm in fruit. The sepals are 2 mm long with teeth that are linear, scaly outside, and persistent. The petals are fused into a broad tube, 1-3 cm long. The four-angled seed has 5 extremely sharp spines. This plant is also an important famine food, with its leaves eaten as a vegetable.
