Description of Veliparuthi / Uthamani (Trellis-Vine)
Veliparuthi, also known as Uthamani or Trellis-Vine, is a well-known plant in villages. The best way to identify this plant is by its unique fruits and heart-shaped leaves. It is commonly found along roadsides, hence the name "veli paruthi." The plant emits an unpleasant odor when bruised, and its stems produce a milky latex when broken. Every part of this plant, including the latex, is used in traditional medicine. The leaves are opposite, broadly ovate to suborbicular, variable in size, with varying lengths of petioles. The leaves are almost glabrous above and velvety below. The flower corolla forms a greenish-yellow or dull white tube. The fruit matures after 13 to 14 months and releases ovate seeds covered with velvety hairs.
