About Thamarai (Indian Lotus)
The Indian lotus, Nelumbo nucifera, is the national flower of India and Vietnam. This remarkable plant grows to a height of about 150 cm with a horizontal spread of up to 3 meters. Its roots are firmly planted in the soil at the bottom of ponds or rivers, while its leaves float on the water's surface. The leaves can be as large as 60 cm in diameter, and the showy flowers can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. The fruits are conical pods containing seeds in their holes. The lotus flower blooms in beautiful hues of pink and white. Native to Greater India, it is commonly cultivated in water gardens.
