About Manjitti Ver (Indian Madder Root)
Indian Madder is a perennial climbing herb that can grow to a height of 1.5 meters. The evergreen leaves are 5-10 cm long and 2-3 cm broad, arranged in whorls of 4-7 stars around the central stem. The leaves are ovate-heart shaped, entire, pointed, and heart-shaped at the base, rarely rounded, with 3-9 palmately veined leaves. The upper surface is mostly hairless and rough. The roots can be over a meter long, up to 12 mm thick. The roots contain an organic compound called Alizarin, which gives its red color to a textile dye known as Rose madder.
