About Ilanthai Vatral (Indian Jujube)
Indian jujube, known as Ilanthai, is a small to medium-sized subtropical tree popular for its small berry-like fruit. This tree grows wild in forests and on wastelands throughout the mid-hills, up to elevations of 1,400 meters. The small fruits are enjoyed by both children and adults. The tree has drooping branches and can reach heights of 5 to 8 meters with a trunk girth of 85 cm. The bark is rough, gray or dull black, and irregularly cracked, often covered with a thick layer of green moss in older trees. The leaves are ovate, petiolate with fine serrations, dark green and shiny above, and white tomentose beneath. The yellowish flowers grow in clusters along the leaf axils, followed by rounded fruits that range from three-quarters of an inch to an inch-and-a-half in size. Trees are easily propagated by seeds, with seedlings taking two to three years to start fruit production.
