About Aththi Vithai (Cluster Fig)
Goolar, also known as the Cluster Fig, is an attractive fig tree with a crooked trunk and a spreading crown. Unlike the banyan, it has no aerial roots. The most distinctive aspect of this tree is the red, furry figs in short clusters, which grow directly out of the trunk. The figs actually carry hundreds of flowers, pollinated by small wasps that crawl through openings in search of a suitable place to lay eggs. This symbiotic relationship is essential for the reproduction of the fig tree. Goolar is commonly found in cities and towns, and it has evergreen leaves when near a water source, otherwise shedding them in January. Traditionally, figs have been used by children for play, creating shapes with sticks inserted into the figs.
