About Arasa Vithai (Sacred Fig)
The Sacred Fig, known botanically as Ficus religiosa, is a large dry-season deciduous or semi-evergreen tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall, with a trunk diameter reaching up to 3 meters. Its leaves are heart-shaped with a distinctive extended drip tip, measuring 10–17 cm long and 8–12 cm broad, with a 6–10 cm petiole. The seeds of the Sacred Fig are dispersed by various birds and can germinate on other trees. Despite this, the Peepal tree is not parasitic; it relies on air, deposited material, and rain for nutrition. The seeds are known for their cooling, refrigerant, laxative, and alterative properties.
